Alternative PPE for Hot Summer Days

Summer shifts can be brutal. The heat’s relentless, the calls keep coming, and the job never gets any easier. All that is made worse by the fact that you’re wrapped up in what can be described as a winter coat and snow pants all day—aka turnout gear.

That’s why so many departments are discovering the value of alternative PPE. It’s gear designed to match the call, reduce heat stress, and keep firefighters safer and more effective on scene.

Ready When It Matters

Turnouts are built for the worst-case scenario. They’re tough, protective, and absolutely essential for structural fires.

But all that protection comes with a downside. Because they need to be three layers and protect from everything from bloodborne pathogens to high-heat conditions, they’re going to weigh more and trap more heat in.

But the reality is, most calls (EMS runs, vehicle extrications, technical rescues, wildland incidents) don’t always require the full weight and encapsulation of bunker gear.

Alternative PPE is designed for these types of calls. It’s lighter, more breathable, and purpose-built to provide the right protection without the extra bulk. Think of it like choosing the right tool for the job. You wouldn’t use an axe for a medical call—so why wear full turnouts when they’re not needed?

Lighter, more breathable gear means that you don’t have to work as hard to cool yourself down on those other calls. You’ll sweat less, keeping yourself more hydrated. You won’t have to bear the full weight of your gear.

That means that when you do need to hop into your turnouts for that structural call, you’ll be more prepared to do the job in front of you. Energy isn’t an unlimited resource, so why waste it if you don’t have to?

Heat Stress Is a Serious Risk

Heat stress isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. It’s the leading cause of firefighter line-of-duty deaths. Wearing heavy gear in high temperatures, especially during physically demanding tasks, can quickly elevate core body temperature. That puts firefighters at risk for heat stroke, which can be fatal. Even mild heat stress can impair decision-making, coordination, and reaction time.

Alternative PPE helps mitigate that risk. With fewer layers and more breathable materials, it allows the body to regulate temperature more effectively. Sweat can evaporate, cooling the body naturally.

Wearing turnouts on every call increases the risk overheating. More time in gear means more possibility of putting yourself at risk.

Gear That Matches the Mission

Alternative PPE isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are options certified for wildland firefighting, technical rescue, EMS, and more. Some garments, like TECGEN51 Multipurpose PPE, are multifunctional, meaning they’re certified for multiple types of calls—ideal for departments that need flexibility.

The key is matching the gear to the hazards. That way, firefighters get the protection they need without the weight they don’t.

Smarter Gear for a Smarter Fire Service

Firefighting is evolving. Calls are more diverse, risks are better understood, and gear options are more advanced than ever.

Alternative PPE isn’t a replacement for turnouts—it’s a complement. It helps firefighters stay cooler, move faster, and respond more effectively. It protects structural gear, reduces health risks, and improves operational readiness.

As summer temperatures rise, it’s worth asking: is your crew wearing the right gear for the job? Alternative PPE might be the smartest upgrade your department makes this season.
