What Gloves Are You Wearing?

When you’re on scene, the last thing you want to think about is your gear. As a gear manufacturer, that means our job is to make PPE so well that you forget you’re wearing it.

Fire-Dex started out over 40 years ago making one product: our famous Dex-Pro Structural Firefighting Gloves. We set out to make a better firefighting glove with the goal of increasing dexterity. That glove turned out so well that we named our company after it: Fire-Dex means dexterity on the fireground.

While we’ve made a lot of changes and upgrades to that glove over the years, it remains a favorite of firefighters across the world.

But the fireground isn’t the only place firefighters respond to. For non-structural calls, firefighters asked for a glove specifically made to take a beating and to protect them from the rigors of everything from elevator rescues to vehicle extrication.

So we went back to the drawing board, taking the know-how from our Dex-Pro Gloves and applying that to gloves made for rescue operations. Naturally, we called it the Dex-Rescue Glove

Now that the Dex-Rescue Glove has been out for a while, we asked Greg Payeur of Training to Perform Under Pressure how his gloves have held up. As a Fire-Dex ambassador, Greg was one of the first to try out the glove and give his feedback.

“I've been teaching extrication for 20 plus years,” he says. “The biggest question I'll get asked is, ‘what gloves are you wearing? Do you like them?’ And my typical answer was ‘I hate them. I haven't found the stuff that I like yet.’”

As an instructor for Training to Perform Under Pressure, Greg coaches other firefighters on techniques and skills for the fireground and beyond. As an expert on all things firefighting, he’s the perfect person to put gear to the test across a variety of tasks.

He says that over the years he’s tried every type of glove. From leather gloves at the hardware store to specialized extrication gloves, he attempted to find something that was easy to work with and durable. Nothing clicked for him until he tried out a pair of Dex-Rescue Gloves.

With those gloves, he’s attended over 60 trainings and cut well over 100 cars. “They wear like a leather glove. The comfort and dexterity of this glove is not matched by any other extrication glove.”

But that’s not what has left the biggest impression on him. “Usually I would go through three pairs of gloves a year. I've had these for two years and I'm going to probably wear them for another two years. That's how good they are. And you can see the cuts and nicks and brakes on these, but they're still holding up in fantastic shape.”

He concludes: “I absolutely love these gloves and they've been battle tested.”

So the next time someone asks Greg, “what gloves are you wearing?” he can say that he’s had the same pair of high-quality gloves for a long time.
